In a medium-sized pot, combine 1 cup flour, 1/3 cup salt, and 2 teaspoons cream of tartar. Stir well.
Pour in 1 cup water and 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. Mix until smooth.
Place the pot on the stove over medium heat. Stir continuously until the dough thickens and starts to stick to the spoon (about 5-7 minutes).
Remove from heat and let the dough cool for a few minutes.
Divide the dough into 4 portions, place each in a zip-top bag, add food coloring or essential oils, and knead until the color is evenly distributed.
Remove from bags and start playing! Store in an airtight container or silicone bags to keep it fresh.
